Volkswagen has opened early reservations for the ID. GTI, its first electric model to bear the iconic GTI designation. The launch coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original Golf GTI from 1976. In Germany, the ID. GTI starts at 39,995 euros and includes a comprehensive list of standard features.
The electric powertrain delivers 226 horsepower and 290 Newton-meters of torque, driving the front wheels, a characteristic of GTI models. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 190 km/h. To enhance cornering grip, the car is equipped with an electronic differential lock on the front axle, adaptive suspension, and progressive steering.
A dedicated GTI driving mode, activated by a steering wheel button, sharpens the throttle response, steering, and suspension, while also playing a specially developed engine sound and altering the dashboard's visual display. The battery has a net capacity of 52 kWh, offering a European WLTP range of up to 431 km. Using a fast charger, the vehicle can charge at up to 105 kW, reaching 80% capacity from 10% in approximately 24 minutes.
Visually, the electric GTI is distinguished by a red stripe on the front grille with a honeycomb pattern, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a roof spoiler. Inside, it features sport seats with the traditional GTI plaid upholstery, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.9-inch infotainment screen. Drivers can opt for a display mimicking the first-generation Golf's dashboard, and a cassette tape graphic appears during music playback, a nod to the 1980s.
Thanks to the compact electric drivetrain components, the trunk capacity is increased to 441 liters, compared to 351 liters in the gasoline-powered Polo GTI. With the rear seats folded, the cargo space expands to 1,240 liters. Pricing and arrival dates for Israel have not yet been announced.
