YouTube has announced a significant update to its YouTube Shorts recommendation system aimed at combating the widespread practice of "cut and paste" content. Under the new policy, channels that primarily re-upload or aggregate videos from other creators without substantial modification will face a significant reduction in their algorithmic reach. The change was officially announced by Rana Ritchie, YouTube's Creator Relations Representative, on the Creator Insider channel, as part of a broader effort to prioritize original content in the Shorts feed. This move follows recent modifications to Shorts, including changing the like button to a heart and introducing the ability to pause infinite scrolling.
Previously, many channels exploited the Shorts format by clipping segments from longer, successful videos of other creators with minimal editing. Ritchie clarified that such tactics will no longer be sufficient for algorithmic boosts. Simple descriptive narration that merely describes on-screen action will not be considered original. Superficial technical edits, such as minor speed adjustments, basic filters, minor cuts, or automatic template edits, will also not prevent a drop in exposure. The platform now requires creators to add genuine added value, such as in-depth commentary, personal analysis, original storytelling, or new critical context, for "remixed" content. Those wishing to share another creator's video are advised to use the community tab and link to the original.
This update extends beyond monetization, targeting the core of a channel's visibility: the recommendation system. Channels failing to provide added value will cease to appear in the feed, regardless of their monetization status. YouTube clarified that this update does not apply to creators clipping Shorts from their own longer videos. This strategy aligns with similar actions taken by Meta platforms; Instagram recently announced that accounts recycling others' work would be ineligible for recommendations on Feed and Reels unless most of their content in the past 30 days was original. Facebook has also restricted distribution and revoked monetization for aggregation accounts.
YouTube indicated that the system will "re-evaluate" channels that change their approach, with channels transitioning from re-uploads to original content being reassessed over time. This presents a potential last chance for many pages, including those in Israel that have built audiences on clipped content from other shows and videos, to adapt. In parallel to combating recycled videos, YouTube is actively exploring the acquisition of more live sports broadcasting rights, according to a CNBC report. The strategy involves offering select games for free to attract viewers while locking most broadcasts behind a YouTube Premium subscription. The company is also reportedly considering becoming the exclusive home for all NBA local games starting in 2027.
