With Bazunu unavailable, and likely only two other goalkeepers, Keiren Westwood and Max O'Leary, available, the team had to find a way to meet the requirement. Dunne, a center-back for Queens Park Rangers, was officially listed as a goalkeeper on the UEFA portal, even receiving the number 23 for the registration.

This unusual move came after a tumultuous period for the Irish team. Bazunu had announced his personal decision not to play against Israel, citing his worldview. Following extensive discussions and a team vote, Ireland decided to proceed with the match.

Dunne, 28, is not expected to actually play in goal. This registration is a technical maneuver to satisfy the competition's administrative requirements, allowing Ireland to field a team against Israel without violating the rules.
