Ireland Lists Defender Gavin Bazunu as Goalkeeper for Match Against Israel

With Bazunu unavailable, and only two other goalkeepers, Caoimhin Kelleher and Max O'Leary, on the roster, the Irish squad registered defender Jimmy Dunne as a goalkeeper. Dunne, a 28-year-old player for Queens Park Rangers, was assigned the number 23 and listed as a goalkeeper on the official UEFA roster, alongside Kelleher and O'Leary.

This tactical maneuver occurred after a tumultuous 24 hours for the Irish team. Bazunu announced his decision not to play against Israel, stating it was a personal choice based on his worldview. Following extensive discussions and a team vote, Ireland decided to proceed with the match.

Bazunu did not participate in the team's final training session, which only included Kelleher and O'Leary among the goalkeepers. The registration of Dunne as a goalkeeper is a technical solution to meet UEFA's requirements and does not indicate he is expected to play in goal.
