Canadian Jewish Journalist Suspended After Posting Protest Video

Canada's public broadcaster, the CBC, has suspended veteran journalist and producer Neil Herland pending a disciplinary review after he posted a video of pro-Palestinian protesters blocking access to a Yom Kippur prayer service in Toronto. Herland, whose father is a Holocaust survivor, filmed the demonstration on the eve of Yom Kippur as he was heading to services at The Song Shul. The protesters, some masked, waved Palestinian flags and shouted antisemitic slogans, including "you are going to hell" and "baby killers," at worshippers. Herland shared the footage on X, where it garnered over three million views. He also expressed concerns about rising antisemitism in Canada, stating he obtained an Austrian passport out of fear for his safety.

The suspension followed a formal complaint by the pro-Palestinian organization CJPME. The CBC's decision has sparked public outrage and accusations of a double standard, with critics pointing to instances where other CBC journalists have expressed personal views without penalty. Notably, a CBC cameraman in Gaza who accused Israel of "genocide" on social media reportedly faced no disciplinary action.

In a letter to the CBC, Eliza Spiro, a leader at The Song Shul, defended Herland, confirming that his video accurately depicted the verbal abuse and intimidation faced by attendees. She noted that some individuals were too afraid to attend services and praised Herland for drawing attention to the escalating issue.

A CBC spokesperson stated that the corporation does not comment on internal human resources matters.
