Toy Story 5 Shatters Box Office Records With $312 Million Global Start

Toy Story 5 has opened with record-setting results, bringing in $160 million in its first weekend in theaters and setting the highest opening in the franchise’s history. Over three days, the Pixar sequel earned a further $152 million internationally, for an estimated global total of $312 million.

The previous franchise record belonged to Toy Story 4, which debuted with $120.9 million in 2019, according to Rentrak, a media measurement company. Since the first Toy Story film premiered in 1995, the series has now generated more than $3 billion worldwide.

The new film also posted the second-biggest opening ever for an animated movie, trailing only Incredibles 2, which made $182.7 million in the United States in 2018. About 11.5 million moviegoers saw Toy Story 5 during the holiday weekend in the U.S., according to EntTelligence.

More than a quarter of viewers chose pricier large-format and premium screenings. IMAX reported $11.5 million in U.S. ticket sales and $18.4 million globally. Nearly 70% of ticket buyers came as part of family groups, underscoring the strong performance of family-friendly films, which have dominated theaters in recent years and typically hold up well after opening weekend.
