Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” has opened with a record-setting global debut, drawing stunned reactions from box office watchers. The film earned $312 million worldwide in its first three days, the biggest opening weekend in the franchise’s 31-year history.
The totals were split almost evenly between North America and the rest of the world. The movie brought in $160 million in North American theaters and another $152 million internationally, according to the report.
That performance easily tops “Toy Story 4,” which had held the previous franchise record since 2019 with a $120.9 million opening. The new installment surpassed that figure by nearly 33%, before any inflation adjustment is taken into account.
Variety reported that the film landed at the very top end of expectations and opened in 4,425 theaters. The article says the franchise, which has been around for more than three decades, has now shattered its own record after 31 years.
