Israel Strikes Southern Lebanon Amid Diplomatic Push for Calm
Israel conducted artillery shelling and airstrikes across several areas in southern Lebanon on Thursday, targeting towns like Khiam and Hula, as well as areas between the towns of Haddatha and Haris. Merkava tanks were observed moving within Khiam. These military actions occur while Lebanese officials engage in diplomatic efforts at the UN General Assembly in New York to de-escalate tensions and prevent wider conflict.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and Foreign Minister Yusuf Rizk held meetings with international leaders to discuss the situation in Lebanon and regional security. A key focus of these discussions is the future of the international presence in southern Lebanon, particularly with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission set to end on December 31, 2026. Lebanon is seeking continued international support, possibly through a UN-backed presence, to avoid a security vacuum and bolster the Lebanese army's capacity to assert state authority in the south.
International efforts are underway to support the Lebanese armed forces. The US Embassy announced the delivery of 16 million rounds of ammunition, and Italy's Foreign Minister pledged additional financial support for Christian villages in southern Lebanon. These developments follow a February 2024 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which led to a US-brokered ceasefire agreement in April 2026. This agreement aimed to halt hostilities and pave the way for negotiations on a lasting security settlement, including the disarming of Hezbollah and the deployment of the Lebanese army.
An "framework agreement" signed by Lebanon and Israel on June 26, under US auspices, outlined a path toward a comprehensive peace deal. This included provisions for Israeli troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon, Lebanese army deployment, and steps towards Hezbollah's disarmament. Subsequent US-mediated talks, including discussions in Rome in July, explored establishing "pilot zones" for Israeli withdrawal and Lebanese army deployment. However, the implementation of these arrangements has faced complications, with ongoing tensions and cross-border violations persisting.
