UK Police Arrest Two in Plot Targeting Jewish Community

British counter-terrorism police have arrested two men in Manchester as part of an investigation into an alleged terrorist plot targeting the Jewish community in northern England. The men, both in their 30s, were detained under anti-terrorism legislation, with searches also conducted in Salford and Liverpool. Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism, Vicki Evans, stated that the arrests followed a lengthy and targeted investigation that successfully disrupted a planned attack. While police do not believe there is an immediate threat, patrols have been increased in Manchester ahead of the Jewish High Holy Days. The suspects are in custody in London for further questioning.

The arrests come nearly a year after a similar incident in Manchester, where two worshippers were killed in an attack on a synagogue during Yom Kippur. The perpetrator of that attack was a British citizen who claimed ties to radical groups. Police acknowledge that these developments are causing significant concern within the Jewish community and the wider public, particularly during the religious holiday period. Authorities have pledged close cooperation with regional units to ensure public safety.

Since the October 2023 events in the Middle East, the UK has seen a rise in antisemitic incidents, including arson attacks on Jewish community sites and assaults on individuals. This has led to the national terror threat level being raised to 'severe,' with government officials emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures to protect the Jewish population.
