Israel Warns Travelers Bringing Four Species for Sukkot

The story · English

Israel's Ministry of Agriculture has issued a warning to travelers returning to Israel for the Sukkot holiday regarding the importation of the "Four Species" (Arba'at HaMinim). Bringing plant products, including the Four Species, into Israel without proper authorization is prohibited, with the exception of a single etrog for personal use. This regulation is in place to prevent the introduction of pests and diseases that could harm Israel's plant life and agriculture.

Travelers found with a prohibited set of the Four Species will have them confiscated but will be provided with a complimentary Israeli-grown replacement set, including a lulav, hadas, and aravah. This measure aims to mitigate the impact on individuals while maintaining agricultural safety.

Since the beginning of 2026, over 1,200 travelers have been caught at Ben Gurion Airport with approximately three tons of prohibited plant material. The Ministry emphasizes that unchecked plant imports can introduce non-native pests and diseases, potentially causing significant damage to local crops and impacting agricultural exports.

Shlomit Tzioni, a senior official at the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that importing fruits, vegetables, seeds, flower seedlings, and the Four Species without prior approval from the Plant Protection and Inspection Services poses a severe risk. Hidden diseases and pests on these items can cause irreversible damage to agricultural produce, plants, and ornamental areas.
