שר הביטחון, ישראל כץ, הזהיר כי אם ייחטף חייל או אזרח ישראלי, העיר עזה כולה, על מיליון תושביה, תפונה דרומה. כץ נשא דברים בטקס האזכרה לחללי מלחמת יום הכיפורים בהר הרצל, שם הדגיש כי צה"ל ערוך בלבנון, בסוריה ובעזה באזורי ביטחון מבוצרים ודלילי תושבים. הוא הוסיף כי ישראל לא תסיג את כוחותיה בעזה לקווי היערכות חדשים בתוך הרצועה כל עוד חמאס לא יסולק ועזה לא תפורז מנשק ומנהרות. האזהרה של כץ כוונה לארגון הטרור חמאס ותומכיו, מאיראן ועד טורקיה.
