השר לביטחון לאומי, איתמר בן גביר, קרא לאזרחים לשאת את נשקם האישי עמם גם בעת הגעה לתפילות יום כיפור. "אל תשאירו את הנשק בכספת, שאו אותו עמכם לתפילות", אמר בן גביר. הקריאה פורסמה לקראת החג, המהווה תקופה רגישה מבחינה ביטחונית, ונועדה, לדבריו, להגביר את תחושת הביטחון האישי של האזרחים. השר הדגיש את חשיבות ההגנה העצמית ואת זכותם של אזרחים נושאי רישיון נשק לשאת אותו בכל עת, כולל במקומות קדושים ובאירועים המוניים. הוא ציין כי הנחיות אלו אינן סותרות את החוק, אלא נועדו להבטיח את ביטחונם של האזרחים.
