Israeli Security Minister Urges Licensed Gun Owners to Carry Weapons During High Holidays

As Yom Kippur approaches, Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has urged licensed gun owners to carry their firearms with them, including into synagogues, during the upcoming Jewish high holiday. "Don't leave your weapon in the safe," he stated on Sunday, advising citizens to carry their weapons lawfully and responsibly during prayers and while traveling.

Ben-Gvir highlighted that 300,000 new gun permits have been issued since October 7 as part of his arms reform. He acknowledged the efforts of security forces but emphasized that armed citizens also have a crucial role in emergencies. "Your weapon can save your life, your family's life, and the lives of worshipers," he added, calling on gun owners to remain vigilant and protect those around them.

The minister's appeal comes amid heightened security tensions. Earlier on Sunday, a father of six, Netanel Shakron, was killed in a shooting attack near Neve Tzuf in the West Bank. The alleged perpetrator was apprehended hours later in a Ramallah hospital. Ben-Gvir concluded his message by wishing the Israeli people an easy and beneficial fast and a "Gmar Hatima Tova" (a traditional blessing for the sealing of the Book of Life).

This directive follows a significant increase in gun permits issued under Ben-Gvir's leadership, aiming to bolster civilian self-defense capabilities in the face of ongoing security challenges.
