כוחות מיוחדים של צה"ל, בהכוונה מודיעינית של שירות הביטחון הכללי (שב"כ), עצרו את המחבל שביצע את פיגוע הירי. פרטים נוספים על זהות המחבל, נסיבות המעצר והפיגוע עצמו לא פורסמו באופן רשמי.

הדיווח על המעצר מגיע על רקע התבטאויות שונות ברשתות החברתיות, חלקן קשורות לפוליטיקה הישראלית ובהן חזרה על הסיסמה "תם עידן נתניהו סופית". לא ברור אם יש קשר בין ההתבטאויות הללו לבין הפיגוע או מעצר המחבל.
