Yemen's Houthis Strike Saudi Capital, Airport Fire Erupts

A large plume of black smoke billowed from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, accompanied by explosions, as Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for attacking "sensitive targets" in the Saudi capital with missiles and drones. Footage from the scene showed fire near fuel tanks, with reports later confirming firefighters had extinguished a blaze in a tank bearing the logo of Saudi Aramco. Simultaneously, the Houthis announced an attack on an Aramco facility in Yanbu, a key oil export hub on the Red Sea coast, though the extent of the damage there is still under assessment.

The incident in Riyadh strikes at the heart of Saudi Arabia's economic ambitions. King Khalid International Airport, the kingdom's second-largest, handled 40.8 million passengers last year and is central to plans to transform Riyadh into a regional aviation, business, and tourism center, with capacity expected to increase significantly by 2026. The attack caused substantial flight cancellations and delays, with flight tracking sites rating the disruptions as severe for parts of the day.

Earlier Sunday, Saudi Civil Defense issued alerts to residents in Riyadh and other cities, including Jeddah and Yanbu, warning of potential threats and advising people to stay away from windows and open areas. These alerts marked the first time since the recent escalation of the conflict with the Houthis that such warnings were issued in Riyadh twice within two hours.

The Houthis' targeting of the airport introduces a new economic front for Saudi Arabia, extending beyond previous attacks on oil infrastructure like the East-West pipeline and threats to Red Sea shipping. The airport's strategic importance lies in its role as a linchpin for Riyadh's ambitious plans to become a global business hub, attracting millions of business travelers and tourists. The attack on Yanbu further highlights the Houthis' expanding threat across the entire Saudi energy supply chain, from eastern fields to Red Sea export routes.

In response to the escalating threats, Saudi Arabia is reportedly seeking broader security cooperation, including a recent request for intelligence assistance from Israel against the Houthis, mediated by the United States. The UN Security Council condemned the Houthi attacks, citing damage to civilian and energy infrastructure and threats to maritime navigation.
