New Torah Scroll Unveiled in Historic Ceremony in Kaliningrad

The story · English

A new Torah scroll was dedicated in Kaliningrad during the "Days of Awe" period, culminating in a joyous celebration that brought together members of the local Jewish community and guests from abroad. The event, held in the city's grand new synagogue, blended the solemnity of the High Holy Days with the happiness of a Torah holiday.

The festivities began with a morning prayer service, followed by a large gathering of community members, students, and their families. Attendees included many who traveled from Moscow, the United States, Dubai, and Israel, underscoring the event's significance.

Rabbi David Shvedik, Kaliningrad's chief rabbi, and Rabbi Avraham Baruch Deitsch, the Chabad emissary, welcomed the guests. The success of the event was attributed to the extensive planning by Rabbi Deitsch and his wife. The final letters of the Torah were inscribed by community rabbis, emissaries, and distinguished guests, including the Torah's donor, Mr. Edik Elhanan Migirov, who dedicated the scroll in memory of his parents, Avraham and Sarah. Migirov expressed his hope that the synagogue would always be filled with worshippers and wished everyone a healthy and sweet new year.

Rabbi Berel Lazar, chief rabbi of Russia, sent a special video message emphasizing the importance of unity around the Torah and congratulating the community and the donor. The celebration continued with a procession outside the synagogue, where participants danced under a decorated canopy despite the winter weather. The new Torah scroll was then brought into the sanctuary with joyous singing and dancing.

The dedication marks another significant step in the revitalization of the Jewish community in Kaliningrad. The event concluded with a festive meal, during which Migirov received a special token of appreciation. The gathering extended into the night, with participants making resolutions to increase Torah study and observance, praying that the new scroll will illuminate the city in the coming year.
