Celine Dion Returns to Stage After Battling Stiff-Person Syndrome

The story · English

Pop superstar Celine Dion has made a remarkable return to the stage, nearly two years after a difficult documentary revealed her struggles with stiff-person syndrome. The singer, who was seen in the documentary experiencing painful muscle spasms and difficulty functioning, has now surprised fans by performing again in front of large crowds.

Neurologists attribute her improved condition to a combination of intensive medical treatment and extensive rehabilitation. Dr. Kobi Dabush, a neurologist, explained that while audiences see her singing, "behind the scenes there are many hours of physiotherapy, work with a speech therapist, and training." He emphasized that medication alone is insufficient and that Dion dedicates five days a week to physical and vocal therapies.

Dion is reportedly receiving IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin therapy), a treatment used for autoimmune diseases where the immune system attacks the body. This treatment is available to patients with stiff-person syndrome in Israel. However, the core of her recovery lies in para-medical support, including speech therapy, intensive physiotherapy, and vocal coaching.

Dr. Dabush also suggested the possibility of experimental treatments, potentially developed for other conditions, being used by Dion's medical team, though this has not been publicly disclosed. He noted that many patients with stiff-person syndrome may go undiagnosed due to diagnostic challenges.

Despite her ability to perform, doctors stress that stiff-person syndrome is a chronic condition. While treatment can alleviate symptoms and improve function, it does not cure the disease. Dion's return to the stage signifies a significant improvement in managing her condition and the effectiveness of her rigorous treatment and rehabilitation regimen, rather than a full recovery.
