Decathlon's Discover 500 Kids' Bikes Reviewed Ahead of Yom Kippur
Decathlon's Discover 500, a 16-inch children's bicycle model designed for ages four to six, has been reviewed ahead of Yom Kippur, a holiday when roads become a large cycling track for children. The bike is praised for its attractive, space-themed design and lightweight construction, weighing approximately seven kilograms, which significantly aids young riders in maneuvering, braking, and maintaining balance compared to heavier steel bikes. Its low weight also makes it easy to carry or load into a vehicle.
A nearly six-year-old tester, who had recently learned to ride without training wheels on another brand, found the Discover 500 simple and smooth to operate, exhibiting unexpected ease and confidence. The bike's adapted design and upright seating position contributed to a comfortable and enjoyable riding experience.
Technically, the bike features a special "Stop Easy" braking system. The brake levers are designed to be pressed parallel to the handlebars, fitting naturally into children's hands, offering high accessibility and a comfortable grip. The company claims this system provides more braking power than conventional levers. In practice, the brake was found to be easy to use, facilitating control and stopping, and instilling confidence. Another notable safety feature is the plastic guard covering the chain, which prevents accidents and direct contact with the chain, though it may complicate access for maintenance.
The bike is priced at 770 shekels on sale, placing it at the higher end for children's bikes, significantly above models costing 300-400 shekels but below premium brands like Trek or Evoque, which can exceed 1,000 shekels. Despite the higher price point, the Discover 500 is considered competitive with more expensive, well-known models in terms of product quality, weight, and ease of use.
The 16-inch model is suitable for children aged four to six (height 105-125 cm). It features handlebars and grips adapted for small hands, a comfortable sponge seat, and adjustable handlebars. Recommended maintenance includes periodic cleaning and chain lubrication.
