School Principals' Path to Knesset Highlights Religious Zionist Leadership

The story · English

A review of Knesset members since Israel's founding reveals a notable trend: 20 individuals who previously managed schools have served as lawmakers, with a disproportionately high number coming from the Religious Zionist community. Of the 14 Jewish former school principals in the Knesset, seven, or exactly half, were identified as Religious Zionist.

This group includes prominent figures such as Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Neria, Rabbi Chaim Druckman, Rabbi Yitzhak Levy (who also served as Education Minister), Gila Finkelstein, Rabbi Shai Piron (also a former Education Minister), Moshe (Kinley) Turpaz, and Chili Tropper. Rabbi Avraham Ravitz, though from the Haredi sector, previously headed a vocational high school, and Dr. Aliza Bloch, who managed a high school and now seeks national political office, are also associated with this phenomenon.

The strong presence of Religious Zionists in this role suggests a perception within that community of school principals as public leaders, not just educational administrators. The skills required for managing a school, setting a vision, building community, and motivating people, are seen as transferable to broader public leadership.

This perception may stem from the traditional role of yeshiva heads, who have historically been viewed as more than just administrators. However, the trend has expanded beyond the classic yeshiva head to include principals of state religious schools and even those managing schools for at-risk youth.

Historically, Religious Zionist principals entered politics primarily through their own movement's parties, like the Mafdal. More recently, figures like Rabbi Shai Piron and Moshe Turpaz joined Yesh Atid, while Chili Tropper and Aliza Bloch joined the Blue and White party, indicating a broader recognition of their leadership potential by politicians outside the Religious Zionist sphere.

The article concludes that managing a school is inherently a form of public leadership, shaping not only the institution but also society. It argues that even principals who do not enter national politics deserve recognition and influence commensurate with their current public leadership roles.
