ג'ארד קושנר, חתנו של נשיא ארצות הברית לשעבר דונלד טראמפ, חשף כי ארצות הברית ניצלה את "התקיפה הכושלת של ישראל בקטאר" כדי לקדם עסקה לשחרור חטופים עם חמאס. קושנר תיאר את התקיפה כ"נוראית" וציין כי היא הובילה לבידודה של ישראל בזירה הבינלאומית.

לדברי קושנר, ארצות הברית השתמשה בדינמיקה שנוצרה בעקבות התקיפה כדי להפעיל לחץ על חמאס להסכים לעסקה, עסקה שלטענתו החמאס מרוצה ממנה כיום. הוא הסביר כי באותה עת, חמאס חשו אי-נוחות מהמהלכים שנדרשו מהם, אך בסופו של דבר התוצאה הייתה טובה עבורם ועבור תושבי עזה.
