Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch's Warning About Trump Resurfaces Amid Iran Deal Fears
As concern grows over the U.S. administration’s emerging agreements with Iran, a speech delivered two years ago by Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, one of the leading halachic authorities in the Torah world, is drawing renewed attention. The remarks came shortly after Donald Trump was elected to a second term as president of the United States, a moment when many in the broader public and political circles were celebrating and viewing him as a dependable ally for the Jewish people.
Sternbuch addressed a group of overseas businessmen and wealthy donors in an unusual choice of English, apparently so the message would land directly. He warned that relying on a foreign leader would not bring salvation. “Today there are many people who rely on the new president of America, convinced with all their heart that he will help us,” he said. “But we must know and understand, those who place their trust in flesh and blood delay the coming of the Messiah.”
He went on to say, “Only when we truly understand that the Holy One, blessed be He, is the only power that can help us, and that there is none besides Him, will we merit redemption.” In a further passage, he said, “No one can help us, only God alone. We will not be saved by the president of America.” He added that redemption would come only when Jews abandon faith in military strength, air power, or claims of national might, and recognize that only God can bring complete deliverance.
