Palestinian Debt Forgiveness Initiative Offers Relief Amid Economic Crisis

A social initiative called "Tanzal Lillah" (Forgiveness for God's Sake) is gaining traction in the West Bank, encouraging creditors to forgive debts owed by individuals struggling with the worsening economic situation. Launched by journalist and community activist Alaa Al-Rimawi on social media, the campaign aims to alleviate financial burdens on Palestinians facing income difficulties and mounting obligations.

The initiative has evolved from a personal effort to a broader community movement, with individuals from various professions, including farmers, laborers, business owners, and companies, participating. Al-Rimawi stated the idea originated from a desire to "mend people's hearts" and motivate those who can afford it to waive some of their financial claims. Participants have publicly announced the cancellation of debts, with some tearing up checks and others destroying debt ledgers. Reported debt forgiveness ranges from small amounts to thousands of shekels, including one instance of forgiving 4,000 shekels on a car payment and another of 130 shekels for a kiosk owner.

Al-Rimawi shared a story of a father who forgave a 3,000 shekel debt and tore up the check, only for his young daughter to then forgive her brother a 10 shekel debt. The "Tanzal Lillah" campaign also sparks a discussion about the role of economic institutions in addressing the crisis.
