Israel's High Court Orders Cancellation of Media Council Appointments
Israel's Supreme Court, known as the High Court of Justice (Bagatz), has ruled that government appointments to the Second Authority for Television and Radio Council must be canceled. The court ordered the nullification of the appointments of Dr. Yifat Ben-Haim-Segev as chairperson, and Adv. Kineret Brashi and Dr. Haim Shine as council members.
The petitioners had argued that the government's decisions were made in a "hasty process, lacking full factual and legal infrastructure." They also claimed the appointments were intended to thwart the acquisition of Channel 13. Furthermore, it was argued that Dr. Ben-Haim-Segev's status as a witness in the Prime Minister's criminal trial, coupled with his involvement in her appointment, constituted a breach of conflict of interest regulations.
