Israel's High Court Overturns Broadcast Council Appointments, Minister Vows Reform

Israel's Supreme Court, the High Court of Justice (BAGATZ), has unanimously overturned government decisions appointing Ifat Ben-Haim Seggev as chairwoman of the Second Authority for Television and Radio Council, and appointing Kineret Barashi and Haim Shein as council members. The ruling, issued by Justices Yitzhak Amit, Alex Stein, and Ruth Ronen, upheld five appeals filed against the appointments. Among the appellants were the Journalists' Union of Israel, "Hadashot 12" (Channel 12 News), and the Movement for Quality of Government. The petitioners argued that the appointments were fundamentally flawed, biased, lacked proper consultation, and harmed press freedom. The Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, supported some of these claims, stating that the appointments committee lacked crucial information regarding conflicts of interest and bias among candidates. Communications Minister Shlomo Karai fiercely criticized the court's decision, calling for an immediate Knesset session during the parliamentary recess. He asserted that the court overstepped its authority by nullifying government decisions and vowed to advance judicial reform to rebalance power between the branches of government during the next Knesset term.
