Bonnie Tyler Is Out of Coma, Still in Intensive Care After Emergency Surgery

Welsh pop singer Bonnie Tyler is no longer in a coma, but she remains seriously ill and hospitalized in intensive care at a hospital in Portugal, according to an update posted overnight on her official website. Tyler, 75, underwent emergency bowel surgery in May and was then placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery.

The statement said her condition is improving and that doctors believe she will recover, but that the process will be slow. It also said all of her summer concerts have been canceled, at least through the end of August, while her autumn dates may still go ahead as planned. Her Cardiff show on December 17 has not been canceled so far.

The update came after her family expressed distress over “false rumors” about her health. “Bonnie is no longer in a coma but she is still very ill and in intensive care in Portugal,” the statement said. “The doctors are confident she will recover, but it will take time.” Tyler’s spokesperson apologized for the disappointment caused by the cancellations and thanked fans for their support and love worldwide. The message added that Tyler is aware of the recovery wishes and grateful for them.

Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, became internationally famous in the 1980s with “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped the UK and US charts in 1983. Her other best-known songs include “Holding Out For a Hero” and “It’s a Heartache.” She represented Britain at Eurovision in 2013, and in 2023 she was appointed an MBE for services to music.
