IDF Officers Warn of Gaza Restrictions Risking Repeat of October 7

Officers from the Israel Defense Forces' Gaza Division have warned of a potential return to the conditions that preceded the October 7 Hamas attack, citing significant operational restrictions and external political pressure. During a closed meeting, commanders expressed concern that these limitations prevent them from effectively countering suspicious activity and potential infiltration attempts along the Gaza border.

Brigadier General Liron Betito, the division's commander, acknowledged that soldiers are operating under "serious restrictions and pressure." He specifically mentioned an instance where forces were ordered to halt an operation near the border due to the presence of a "high-ranking Israeli representative," implying external political influence. Betito suggested that this external pressure, potentially linked to visits by figures like former US envoy Jared Kushner, prevents the IDF from acting with full autonomy.

Despite these concerns, army representatives emphasized that the rules of engagement in Gaza have not changed. They characterized the meeting as a "working discussion" between a commander and his subordinates. The IDF also noted ongoing active operations in Gaza in recent days. Earlier reports indicated that soldiers on the front lines were alarmed by increased Hamas terrorist activity near the "yellow line" in Gaza.
