Gaza Division Officers Warn of Return to October 7 Conditions

Officers within the Gaza Division of the IDF have expressed significant frustration with current policies regarding the Gaza Strip, warning of a potential return to the conditions that preceded the October 7th Hamas attacks. During a closed-door event, these officers described threats that are allegedly being left unanswered, with some comparing the current situation to the lead-up to October 7th. They cited instances where observation posts allegedly witnessed militants practicing incursions or armed individuals near the border fence without Israeli military intervention.

Brigadier General Liron Betito, commander of the Gaza Division, acknowledged these concerns and admitted that the military is operating under external pressures and constraints. He explained that in some described scenarios, the IDF received orders not to act, referencing a visit by a senior official to Israel. Betito stated, "We reached a decrease before a turn and pressed the brake. This is an example of external pressures on the IDF. We are operating under constraints all the time."

Betito alluded to external pressures, including the recent visit of former US envoy Jared Kushner to Israel in the middle of the previous month. The implication is that the IDF's operational freedom is being limited by political considerations. However, military sources have emphasized that there has been no change in the open-fire policy in the Gaza Strip and characterized the officers' concerns as a normal discussion between a commander and his soldiers.

Despite the expressed frustrations, recent days have seen extensive IDF activity in Gaza. The IDF Spokesperson's Unit did not provide a comment on the matter.
