Gaza Division Officers Warn of Return to October 7th Scenario Amid External Pressures

Officers within the Gaza Division of the IDF have expressed significant frustration and concern over current policies regarding threats emanating from the Gaza Strip, warning of a potential return to the conditions that preceded the October 7th attacks. During a closed-door event, officers described witnessing militants practicing incursions and observing armed individuals near the border fence without Israeli military response, leading them to declare, "We have returned to October 6th."

Brigadier General Liron Betito, commander of the Gaza Division, acknowledged these concerns and admitted that the military is operating under external pressures and constraints. He cited a specific instance where forces were instructed not to act, linking this decision to the visit of a senior official, implicitly referring to Jared Kushner's visit to Israel in mid-August. Betito stated, "In some of the cases you describe, we received an order not to act. There was a visit by a senior figure in Israel. We reached the point before the bend and hit the brakes. This is an example of the external pressures on the IDF. We are operating under constraints all the time."

Betito's remarks suggest that the IDF's operational freedom in Gaza is being limited by political considerations. However, military sources have pushed back against this narrative, emphasizing that there has been no change in the open-fire policy in Gaza and characterizing the officers' meeting as a routine discussion between a commander and his troops. Despite these internal discussions, recent days have seen significant IDF activity in Gaza.
