Israeli Scientists Develop Hydrogel to Program Blood Stem Cells

The story · English

Researchers from Tel Aviv University, in collaboration with colleagues, have developed a novel hydrogel system designed to mimic the bone marrow's function in generating blood stem cells. These hematopoietic stem cells possess the remarkable ability to differentiate into all types of blood and immune cells, crucial for treating conditions like leukemia and lymphoma. However, cultivating these cells outside the body has been challenging due to their rapid loss of properties in standard lab conditions, limiting their therapeutic use. The primary obstacle was the lack of an environment that replicates their natural niche within the bone marrow.

The newly developed hybrid hydrogel addresses this issue by creating an artificial niche that allows for control over the cells' self-assembly processes. The researchers can independently adjust the gel's mechanical stiffness and its capacity to deliver biochemical and mechanical signals that influence cell behavior. This breakthrough, published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, offers new possibilities for expanding hematopoietic stem cells ex vivo without compromising their essential characteristics.

The scientists believe this principle could be applied to other cell types, potentially advancing regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
