How AI Can Help Households Cut Utility Bills

Household bills such as electricity, gas, property tax and communications arrive regularly, but many people never examine them closely. In a segment on "The Morning World," AI expert Dalia Beyda said most consumers simply pay by standing order or credit card without checking whether something is wrong.

Beyda explained that simple AI tools, including ChatGPT, can turn an ordinary person into a household financial analyst. The process starts with photographing the bills and preparing them for upload, while being careful not to share personal details with any third party. After that, users need to write a precise prompt, meaning clear instructions that tell the AI exactly what analysis they want. Beyda said the more detailed the instructions, the more accurate and relevant the result.

Once the documents and prompt are submitted, the AI can identify the type of bill, detect waste, unusual charges, anomalies and possible savings. In her demonstration, the system reviewed an electricity bill, found it was billed at a flat rate, and suggested checking whether it would be worthwhile to switch to a private electricity supplier.

The tool can also turn the findings into a visual poster or summary dashboard that gathers the main bills, savings opportunities and recommendations in one view. Beyda said the financial impact could be substantial, with household savings of hundreds of shekels a month. She noted that for an average Israeli household, whose electricity bill alone can reach 1,000 shekels, even a 10% reduction is significant.
