Iranian Musician Mohsen Namjoo Returns to Tehran After 20 Years in Exile
Iranian Culture Minister Abbas Salehi announced that the government is facilitating the return of around 100 exiled Iranian artists and public figures, citing their "patriotic stances" during recent conflicts with the U.S. and Israel. Salehi stated that while these individuals may hold critical views of the regime, they supported Iran during its "existential war" over the past year, invoking a proverb about meeting halfway. He emphasized that their return is not conditional on any expectations from the regime, but simply to reconnect with their homeland.
Shortly after the minister's remarks, acclaimed musician Mohsen Namjoo, often dubbed the "Iranian Bob Dylan," released a video announcing his return to Tehran after two decades abroad. Namjoo expressed a desire to be with his family and friends, stating, "I have reached a stage in my life where I feel that exile has been enough for me." He indicated that his ability to practice music in Iran was secondary to his presence there.
Namjoo's return has sparked significant controversy. His former partner, photographer Azadeh Akhlaghi, expressed shock and hurt, revealing in a video that Namjoo disappeared without a trace, leaving her to search for him. She questioned how he entered Iran without a passport and how he managed to leave with her suitcase. Akhlaghi also alluded to Namjoo's past controversies, including accusations of sexual assault and misogynistic remarks, which tarnished his public image in 2021.
Namjoo, known for blending Persian musical traditions with rock, blues, and jazz, left Iran in 2008 following a legal case related to his music. He was convicted in absentia and sentenced to five years in prison. His return is viewed by some pro-regime outlets as a blow to the opposition, while critics condemn it as legitimizing the government, especially after recent crackdowns on protesters. Iranian monarchist factions in the diaspora are particularly vocal, accusing Namjoo and others of being rewarded by the regime for their support during wartime.
