  • West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes in several Israeli locations.
  • 20 human cases diagnosed, including one fatality and one hospitalization.
  • Health and environmental ministries urge increased prevention measures.
  • Risk of severe neurological complications exists for a small percentage.
  • Virus activity expected to continue until the end of November.

Israeli health and environmental ministries announced Tuesday the detection of female mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus in Ramat Hasharon and the regional councils of Emek Hefer, Lev HaSharon, and Eilot. This finding confirms the virus's continued activity during the mosquito season.

The Ministry of Health reported that 20 cases of the disease have been diagnosed since the season began. One patient remains hospitalized, while another has died from the illness. Symptoms observed in most cases included fever, rash, and changes in consciousness. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing to pinpoint potential exposure sites.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has instructed local authorities, particularly in areas where infected mosquitoes were found, to intensify surveillance, prevention, control, and public awareness measures to curb transmission.

Rising temperatures and stagnant water increase mosquito breeding risks. Preventive measures include draining water sources, using approved repellents, installing window screens, wearing long, light-colored clothing, using fans, and reporting mosquito and water accumulations.

The Ministry of Health warned that while most infections are asymptomatic, a small percentage can develop severe, potentially fatal neurological complications. Caution is advised, especially for the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.

Environmental Protection officials stressed that the presence of infected mosquitoes signifies an ongoing risk of infection for the public and urged cooperation in reporting stagnant water and mosquito breeding sites. Both ministries continue monitoring the situation, with West Nile virus activity expected to persist until the end of November.
