Pro-Palestinian Protest Thwarted at Budapest Jewish Festival
A planned pro-Palestinian demonstration at Budapest's annual Cholent Festival, a major Jewish cultural event, was rerouted by authorities following public outcry. The protest, announced by Hungarian rapper G Ras, was initially intended for the festival's entrance. The demonstration's name, "Together for Justice, From Palestine to Budapest," sparked anger among Hungarian Jews, who viewed it as a "dangerous, malicious, and ugly provocation" aimed at disrupting their cultural celebration.
Concerns were amplified by a preceding anti-Israel protest in Budapest advocating for the release of a Gaza hospital director, whom Israel identified as a Hamas operative. The Hungarian Jewish community emphasized that the planned protest at the festival was not a typical political demonstration but an attempt to target a Jewish gathering.
Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony publicly opposed the protest, drawing criticism from organizers who accused him of adopting the "Israeli narrative." The Chief Rabbi of Hungary, Rabbi Shlomo Koves, warned that holding an anti-Israel protest within the physical space of a Jewish event crossed a "dangerous red line," potentially escalating from political dissent to confrontation with local Jews.
Following the controversy, Hungarian authorities altered the protest's approved route, preventing it from reaching the festival's entrance. The Association of Hungarian Torah Observant Communities (EMIH), which organizes the festival as part of "Synagogue Week," welcomed the decision, highlighting the event's sensitivity. Rabbi Koves stated that the Jewish community would not be deterred from practicing its culture openly and proudly.
The Cholent Festival also marked the launch of "Synagogue Week," featuring events at Budapest's synagogues. This week includes the inauguration of two new synagogues, one of which is a youth-led initiative designed to engage young Jews and foster their ownership of community life, operating under the international CTeen network.
