  • Flu outbreak reported with fatalities at a rehabilitation center.
  • Vaccine supply expected to be fully available by mid-November.
  • Experts urge early vaccination, especially for at-risk groups.
  • Ministry of Health assures timely vaccine distribution.

Israel is experiencing an unusual delay in the delivery of seasonal flu vaccines, coinciding with early signs of the flu season and a notable outbreak at a rehabilitation center. The delay is attributed to a postponed decision by the World Health Organization regarding the specific flu strains for this year's vaccine. Consequently, vaccine supplies will be distributed gradually, with full availability not expected until mid-November, by which time the flu season could be well underway.

Meanwhile, the virus is already circulating. At the Beit Lev rehabilitation center in Kfar Saba, 47 individuals, including elderly residents and staff, have contracted the flu, resulting in three fatalities among the elderly. The National Center for Disease Control reported ten new cases of Influenza A in general hospitals in the week ending August 22.

Experts note that data from the Southern Hemisphere, typically used to predict the upcoming season in the Northern Hemisphere, indicated an average season with slightly higher pediatric cases. However, they caution that Southern Hemisphere trends don't always perfectly predict the Northern Hemisphere's experience, citing a mutation last year that caused significant illness despite an average season elsewhere. This year's vaccine is expected to be a better match for circulating strains due to sufficient time for updates.

Health maintenance organizations (HMOs) are preparing for a staggered rollout, with some planning to consolidate initial supplies in larger clinics or areas with higher at-risk populations. While one HMO anticipates a significant logistical challenge, another believes the impact will be minimal, especially given the upcoming holiday period when vaccination rates typically dip. The Ministry of Health, however, asserts that hundreds of thousands of doses will arrive soon, following quality control, and will be distributed promptly.

Medical professionals emphasize that influenza is a serious illness, often underestimated by the public, with potential for severe complications, hospitalization, and death, particularly for the elderly, young children, and those with underlying health conditions. They also highlight the risk of secondary bacterial infections following the flu. Despite public concerns, experts stress the safety and importance of flu vaccination, especially for vulnerable groups, and debunk misinformation surrounding the vaccines.
