- Scottish commentators believe Tavernier has years left to play.
- The move might face some criticism due to the political situation.
Maccabi Tel Aviv is reportedly close to signing James Tavernier, the former captain of Scottish club Rangers, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano. The Israeli club, fresh off a 3-1 victory over Maccabi Haifa, could be bolstering their squad with the experienced player.
Tavernier, who became a free agent after leaving Rangers in June, is said to have agreed to the move. This transfer effectively closes the door on any potential return to his former club.
In Scotland, analysis of the move suggests that while there might be some criticism regarding the political situation in the Middle East, the decision rests with the player. Commentators note that at 34, Tavernier still has several years of playing time left in him.
Former Rangers top scorer Ally McCoist commented on the possibility of Tavernier returning to Rangers, suggesting it wouldn't be the "most foolish thing in the world" to bring him back, perhaps on a six-month contract, given the team's struggles and weak start to the season. McCoist acknowledged Tavernier's excellent service to the club.
