Israel's Air Pollution Drops Dramatically, Saving Economy Billions
תומצת מתוך Behadrei Haredim על ידי baba
Israel's air pollution decreased significantly in 2025, saving the economy approximately 4.2 billion shekels. The reduction is attributed to less coal use, more renewable energy, and decreased waste fires, though benzene emission discrepancies are being investigated.

- Air pollution reduction saved Israel 4.2 billion shekels in 2025.
- PM10 and PM2.5 particle emissions fell by 22-23%.
- Greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 3%.
- Waste fires dropped 13% from the previous year.
- Renewable energy expansion and reduced coal use are key factors.
- Benzene emission data in Haifa and Ashdod is under review.
Israel experienced a significant reduction in air pollution in 2025, leading to an estimated economic saving of 4.2 billion shekels due to decreased pollution costs. This finding comes from the Environmental Protection Ministry's "Emissions Registry for the Environment" and national emissions inventory data.
The data reveals a 22% to 23% decrease in the emission of inhalable PM10 and PM2.5 particles, alongside a 3% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The ministry attributes this positive trend primarily to the ongoing decrease in coal usage, the expansion of renewable energy in electricity production, and regulatory, oversight, and enforcement actions.
Furthermore, 2025 saw a 13% drop in pollutants from urban waste fires, with 10,977 incidents recorded, marking a cumulative 31% decrease since the peak year of 2021. The ministry also noted a discrepancy between benzene emission inventories in the Haifa Bay and Ashdod industrial zones and the actual benzene concentrations measured at monitoring stations, which is currently under investigation.
Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman stated that the data demonstrates "consistent and determined environmental work yields results on the ground," emphasizing the ministry's continued efforts to address challenges and pollution hotspots. Director-General Rami Rosen added that these results align with a long-term trend of significant reductions in major pollutants.
