Tesla Driver Filmed Apparenty Asleep While Car Drives Itself

A video circulating online shows a 36-year-old Tesla driver from Migdal HaEmek apparently asleep at the wheel while his car continued to move. The footage sparked public outcry, leading to the driver's arrest and subsequent release after questioning.

Police clarified that advanced driver-assistance systems in vehicles do not absolve drivers of responsibility or permit them to fall asleep. "The driver must control the vehicle and be alert at all times," stated police spokesperson Adar Gitzis and Or Ravid.

The video, reportedly filmed from another vehicle, shows the driver with closed eyes and head slumped over, suggesting he was asleep. The Tesla, meanwhile, maintained its course on the road. The driver was detained and questioned on suspicion of reckless driving and failing to maintain a proper grip on the steering wheel with both hands.

Authorities emphasized that despite the capabilities of modern vehicle systems, such as lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, the ultimate responsibility remains with the driver. These systems are designed to assist, not to enable complete disengagement from the driving task or allow the driver to sleep.

The Israel Police's Traffic Division confirmed they are examining the video and its circumstances. If the driver is found to have been asleep while the car was in motion, the viral video could lead to further police action.
