- Opposition leader Yair Lapid calls Cohen a party cornerstone.
Former Minister Meir Cohen announced on Monday his decision to withdraw from running on the "BeYachad" list for the upcoming Knesset elections. Cohen will instead assume the role of Chairman and President of the Yesh Atid party's convention. This move comes amid speculation that his departure is due to a lack of a realistic position on the joint list with members associated with Naftali Bennett.
Cohen, who has been a member of Yesh Atid since its inception, stated that he is "happily and proudly making way for the next generation of the party." He highlighted his extensive career, including 25 years in education as a teacher and principal, and 23 years in politics, serving two terms as mayor and twice as Minister of Welfare.
Despite stepping down from the electoral list, Cohen affirmed his continued belief in the party's values and its potential to lead Israel. He expressed his commitment to working towards Yesh Atid, headed by Yair Lapid, forming the next government.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid responded to Cohen's announcement, emphasizing that this is not a farewell. Lapid described Cohen as his "older brother" and a central figure in the party, stating that Cohen will continue to be a cornerstone of Yesh Atid. Lapid revealed that he had asked Cohen to run in a high position but that Cohen wished to provide opportunities for the party's younger members, calling him a "rare person and a rare politician."
