A series of small pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the popular tourist area of Patong, Phuket, Thailand, have caused concern among Israelis vacationing there. The protests, which involved around 150 participants, mostly of Muslim origin, included the burning of Israeli flags, signs calling for a ban on Jewish entry, and racist chants directed at Israeli tourists. The demonstrators claimed their protests were a response to the behavior of Israelis.
These events are considered highly unusual for Thailand, a country generally known for its warm reception of Israeli tourists. Tomer Grauer, an Israeli businessman living in Thailand who attended one of the rallies, described the atmosphere as filled with "non-stop chants and racist remarks." He documented the events, noting that while criticism of Israeli policy is legitimate, the protests crossed a line into generalizations, incitement, and hatred based on origin.
Grauer, who has lived in Thailand for two years and has extensive experience with the positive relationship between Israelis and Thais, expressed his dismay. He emphasized that despite the small scale of the protests, the spread of misinformation, including fake videos falsely portraying Israeli tourists in negative situations, is damaging. The Israeli embassy in Thailand has issued clarifications and warned against the spread of unverified information that could unfairly harm communities unrelated to the incidents.
Despite the organizers' apparent aim to incite local sentiment against Israelis, the protests did not attract large crowds. Grauer stressed the importance of distinguishing between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism or hatred towards an entire people, stating, "We are not in the 1940s." He aims to present the reality of the situation while continuing to foster the friendship between the Israeli and Thai people, highlighting the deep historical ties in tourism, agriculture, and commerce.
