Israeli Football Coach's Wife Details Rising Antisemitism in UK

Shunit Hemed Faragi, wife of Israeli football player and coach Tomer Hemed, has spoken out about the escalating antisemitism her family has faced since moving to Brighton, England, two years ago. The family, including their five daughters, has experienced a surge in hostility, particularly after October 7th, which Hemed Faragi described as a turning point.

Initially, the family felt a general sense of animosity online, but this has intensified into direct threats. Hemed Faragi recounted an online petition calling for her husband's dismissal due to his Israeli nationality, labeling him a "conqueror and child murderer." Another incident involved a fan inciting hatred against Hemed online, leading to severe threats against the entire family, necessitating personal security.

"The hardest thing is to look them in the eyes and explain to them why they hate us," Hemed Faragi stated, referring to her daughters. The family has felt so unsafe that they briefly relocated to Spain for ten days at the club's suggestion, describing it as a "forced escape" to protect their children.

Brighton's football club, whose owner is Jewish, has been supportive, taking the threats seriously and advising the family to keep a low profile. Tomer Hemed was temporarily asked to avoid senior team matches, and the family was advised to take a break until tensions subsided.

Hemed Faragi expressed a deep desire to return to Israel but acknowledged that current circumstances, including her husband's career opportunity, have kept them abroad. She emphasized that while they are proud of their Israeli and Jewish identity and do not want to hide it, their children's safety is paramount. Despite the challenges, she continues her work as a social media influencer and has also pursued academic degrees and parental guidance studies.
