Barcelona's Oriane Goren Faces Online Antisemitism Following Coach Flick's Praise

Oriane Goren, a young Israeli footballer recently promoted to Barcelona's senior squad by coach Hansi Flick, has become a focal point of both admiration and antisemitic hostility online. Flick publicly praised Goren as a highly talented player during a press conference on August 3, 2026, highlighting him as one of the most surprising young talents from the training camp. Barcelona's official social media accounts further amplified this recognition by posting a dedicated message calling him a "pure talent."

However, this acclaim triggered a significant wave of hostile online reactions. A specialized analysis by the social media monitoring firm "Skooper" revealed that out of 2,483 mentions of Goren following Flick's comments, 20.3% (503 mentions) were hostile, with 396 containing explicit antisemitic remarks. Conversely, about 18% of mentions (437) defended him, including many international voices beyond Israeli fans. The majority of discourse (53%) remained neutral and focused on football.

The surge in negative posts was rapid and intense, with hostile mentions increasing by over 1700% within 18 hours after the coach's praise. The study concluded that this wave of antisemitism was not orchestrated by any central campaign but emerged organically from numerous individual accounts. The attacks often demanded that Goren disassociate from his Israeli identity, using the term "Zionist" and its derivatives as grounds for exclusion. This reflects a broader political loyalty test imposed on him, questioning his right to employment unless he renounces his nationality.

Despite the troubling backlash, the analysis suggests that the opposition remains fragmented and not yet an organized movement. The case highlights the challenges Israeli athletes can face internationally, where sporting success can provoke both support and politically charged hostility online.
