Barcelona's Oriane Goren Faces Online Antisemitism After Coach Flick's Praise

Oriane Goren, a young Israeli footballer recently promoted to Barcelona's senior squad by coach Hansi Flick, has become the center of a heated online controversy. Flick publicly praised Goren as a highly talented player during a press conference on August 3, 2026, highlighting him as one of the most surprising young talents from the training camp. Barcelona's official social media accounts also posted a dedicated message calling him a "pure talent," which was translated into five languages and shared widely.

Following these endorsements, Goren faced a significant wave of hostile online reactions, including explicit antisemitic remarks. A specialized analysis by the social media monitoring firm "Scooper" examined 2,480 mentions of Goren across platforms. It found that 20.3% (503 mentions) were hostile, with 396 containing clear antisemitic content. Conversely, about 18% (437 mentions) defended him, including many international voices, while the majority of the discourse (53%) remained neutral and focused on football.

The surge in negative mentions escalated dramatically within 18 hours after Flick's comments, increasing from 15 hostile mentions on the second day to 271 the following day, an 18-fold rise. The study concluded that this backlash was not orchestrated by a central campaign but emerged organically from hundreds of individual accounts expressing hostility independently. The attacks often demanded that Goren disassociate from his Israeli identity, using the term "Zionist" and its derivatives as grounds for rejection, effectively imposing a political loyalty test on the player.

Despite the hostility, the research suggests that this wave of antisemitism is not yet an organized opposition but a broad popular phenomenon. The case highlights the challenges Israeli athletes can face internationally, where their national identity becomes a focal point of political and social contention beyond their sporting achievements.
