Rabbi Yigal Cohen Inspects First Citrons Ahead of Sukkot Holiday

The story · English

Rabbi Yigal Cohen, a prominent rabbinic figure, conducted an inspection of the first citrons (etrogim) of the season on Sunday, approximately thirty days before the Sukkot holiday. The inspection took place under the auspices of the Badatz (rabbinical court) that he oversees. Rabbi Cohen meticulously examined the citrons to ensure their quality and adherence to religious requirements for the upcoming festival.

The Sukkot holiday, also known as the Festival of Booths or Tabernacles, is a major Jewish festival that commemorates the forty years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. A central ritual of the holiday involves the "Four Species," which include the citron, palm branch, myrtle branch, and willow branch. The citron, in particular, is a significant symbol and is used in daily synagogue services and personal blessings throughout the week-long festival.

Rabbi Cohen's early inspection signifies the importance placed on selecting the finest citrons for the observance of the mitzvah (commandment) during Sukkot. The Badatz under his supervision is responsible for certifying and ensuring the kashrut (kosher status) and quality of these ritual items for the public. This proactive examination allows for timely preparation and distribution of suitable citrons for worshippers.
