Approximately 150 residents, business owners, and tourism workers protested in Patong, Phuket, Thailand, on Friday, demanding stricter enforcement against foreigners who disrespect local laws and culture. While officially a protest against all foreign nationals, a significant portion of the grievances specifically targeted Israeli tourists.

The demonstration, organized by the "Phuket Land Protection Group" at Lhoma Park on Patong Beach, saw participants share negative encounters with foreigners. Organizers claimed some tourists engaged in dine-and-dash incidents, property damage, assaults, and reckless behavior. Israeli tourists were repeatedly mentioned in connection with non-payment at restaurants, disputes with tuk-tuk drivers over fares, spitting, assaults, and vehicle vandalism, according to protest representative Saichon Nuchet. He stated these issues are also present in other Thai tourist destinations like Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

A local business owner noted that around three direct flights from Israel arrive in Phuket weekly, carrying hundreds of passengers. He alleged that some Israelis stay long-term, utilizing a network of accommodations and services run by fellow Israelis, which he claims diverts tourism revenue from local Thai businesses. He called for the Thai government to limit tourist visas for Israelis to 15 days and consider capping their entry numbers, preferring tourists who vacation and depart rather than those who stay and operate businesses.

Criticism was also raised regarding Chabad centers, with some participants claiming they primarily serve Israelis and Jews, unlike local religious sites open to broader public use. They demanded assurance that all activities comply with Thai law. Organizers emphasized the protest was not against all foreigners but applied to anyone visiting or residing in Thailand, also mentioning French tourists and motorcycle groups causing disturbances.

However, some Thai media focused heavily on Israelis, with one newspaper headlining that island residents were protesting "Israeli tourists who behave as if they are above the law." Member of Parliament Chalermphong Sangdee, representing Phuket, attempted to moderate the tone, stating Phuket welcomes all visitors but they must respect Thai laws. He identified lax enforcement and potential corruption as the core issues, not a lack of laws, and called for equitable enforcement against all offenders regardless of nationality or economic status.

No official government announcement has been made regarding limiting Israeli stays to 15 days. Nevertheless, the demand and its media coverage reflect growing tensions between some local residents in Thai tourist hubs and foreign visitors and businesses, with Israelis now at the center of the criticism.
