Zara's Secondhand Market Grows, Influencing Consumer Choices

The story · English

The global secondhand clothing market is rapidly expanding, now accounting for approximately 10% of all apparel sales and projected to reach 12-13% by 2030. This growth is driven by rising prices, consumer desire for savings, and the ease of selling pre-owned items through platforms like Vinted, Depop, and eBay. Increasingly, consumers, particularly younger ones, consider the resale value of clothing when making purchasing decisions, effectively assigning two prices to an item: its initial cost and its future resale value.

Fast fashion giants are adapting to this trend, with Zara emerging as a prominent example. The brand has become the second most sought-after brand in the secondhand market globally, after J.Crew. Zara operates "Zara Pre-Owned" in some markets, a platform allowing customers to buy and sell used Zara clothing, alongside offering repair services and donation options. This initiative aims to maintain brand relevance even after a garment leaves the store, facilitating its continued circulation and use.

While Zara's dedicated secondhand platform is not yet available in Israel, the phenomenon of buying and selling used clothing is well-established there through various sales groups and online marketplaces. The increasing significance of the secondhand market suggests it may influence future purchasing habits, shifting the consumer's question from "How much does it cost?" to "How much will it be worth to me when I no longer want it?"
