An unusual weather system brought unseasonable rain to the Eastern Mediterranean, including local showers in northern and central Israel, with Lebanon and Syria experiencing heavier precipitation. Boaz Dayan, director of Israel Weather, described the August system as "truly unusual for the month," noting significant rainfall in Lebanon, which caused flooding, and substantial amounts in Syria. While Israel received some rain, Dayan stated the system "missed" the country to some extent, with the heaviest rainfall occurring further north.

Local showers are expected to continue in northern and central Israel until the afternoon, accompanied by lower-than-average temperatures for the season. Jerusalem, for instance, is forecast to reach only around 28 degrees Celsius, a notable drop from the recent highs of 33-34 degrees. However, this cooler spell is expected to be brief, with temperatures rising again by Tuesday and returning to typical summer heat by Wednesday.

Dayan suggested that these unusual weather events could be linked to the El Niño phenomenon, and that long-range weather models have consistently predicted an exceptionally rainy winter for Israel for months. He pointed to historical El Niño patterns that correlate with very wet winters and significant snowfall in Jerusalem. The current ocean temperatures are also noted as being unusually high.

Dayan also commented on the current summer, noting that while it may feel more "human" than previous ones, temperatures remain significantly higher than historical averages. He cited Jerusalem, where summer temperatures rarely exceeded 30 degrees Celsius in the 1980s but now frequently reach 32-34 degrees, with coastal areas also experiencing a rise to around 31-32 degrees with high humidity. He emphasized that global warming increases the likelihood of extreme weather events.

Dayan clarified that long-range forecasts are based on statistical models and trend analysis, not just short-term predictions. The consistent indication from models of a very wet winter in the region lends significant weight to this forecast, suggesting that the late August rain may be a precursor to a much wetter season ahead.
