Marwan Barghouti, serving multiple life sentences in Israel for involvement in terrorist attacks, has become an international symbol of Palestinian resistance, dubbed the "Palestinian Mandela." While global campaigns and some Israeli voices advocate for his release or political inclusion, Israeli officials and victims emphasize his conviction for five murders and his role in the Second Intifada's violence. The divide highlights contrasting narratives about Barghouti's legacy.

  • Marwan Barghouti is serving five life sentences for direct involvement in five murders during the Second Intifada.
  • International campaigns portray him as a Palestinian political prisoner and call for his release.
  • Nearly 200 Hollywood actors support a petition advocating Barghouti's freedom.
  • Israeli officials and victims describe him as a terrorist responsible for deadly attacks.
  • Barghouti retains influence among Palestinian prisoners and political factions even in jail.
  • The debate reflects a deep divide between international perception and Israeli security views.

Marwan Barghouti has been imprisoned in Israel for over two decades, yet in recent years his image has become the center of a broad global awareness campaign. Advocates portray him as the "Palestinian Mandela," with a petition for his release supported by nearly 200 Hollywood actors and protests worldwide demanding his freedom. Some in Israel even consider him a potential partner for future political agreements.

Barghouti, a senior Fatah leader and commander of Tanzim during the Second Intifada, was arrested by Israel and tried in 2004 at the Tel Aviv District Court. He refused to recognize the court's authority. Ultimately, he was convicted of direct involvement in five murders and sentenced to five life terms plus 40 additional years. He was acquitted in 33 other charges. Moshe Pozilov, a former senior Shin Bet official who interrogated Barghouti, described him as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and the "central engine of the Al-Aqsa Intifada." Pozilov noted that legal limitations at the time complicated linking Barghouti to other attacks, but later laws would have made it easier to connect him to dozens more.

Former Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter also highlighted Barghouti's transformation from a possible interlocutor to a symbol of terror during the Intifada, illustrating how Palestinian heroes are made. Victims' testimonies stand in stark contrast to the international campaigns. Irit Rahamim, a survivor of the 2002 Sea Food Market bombing that killed three and injured 35, recalled the event as a "horror movie." Odelia Moshe, who lost three family members in a 2001 attack on Route 443, called Barghouti a terrorist who sent the killers. Shmuel Landau, whose son was murdered in the same attack, insisted, "This gangster must not be released."

Even behind bars, Barghouti retains influence. Retired Deputy Commissioner Betty Lehat, former chief intelligence officer of the Israel Prison Service, said he became a central figure among prisoners and served as a link between Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Khaled Meshaal. This stark divide defines the current struggle over Barghouti's legacy: internationally, he is seen as a political prisoner and future national leader, while in Israel he remains a convicted murderer serving multiple life sentences, with victims and officials emphasizing the violent reality behind the symbol.

The debate continues amid growing international calls for his release, including from prominent artists and actors.
