Proper Fridge Storage Prevents Premature Spoilage of Fruits and Vegetables
Many common fruits and vegetables emit or are sensitive to ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that accelerates ripening and can cause nearby produce to spoil faster. Apples, pears, avocados, bananas, peaches, nectarines, plums, and tomatoes release ethylene, while broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, and other leafy greens are particularly vulnerable to its effects. To extend freshness, it is recommended to store ethylene-producing fruits separately from ethylene-sensitive vegetables, ideally in different fridge compartments or drawers.
Certain storage practices also help maintain produce quality. For example, avocados should be kept at room temperature until ripe, then refrigerated to slow further ripening. Tomatoes can be stored at room temperature while ripening but should be refrigerated once fully ripe, though this may affect taste and texture. Potatoes and onions should not be stored together despite both preferring a cool, dry, and ventilated environment, as their proximity can accelerate spoilage. Whole garlic prefers a dry, dark, ventilated place and should only be refrigerated after peeling or cutting.
Moisture control is another key factor; washing produce immediately after purchase can leave excess moisture that promotes mold and decay. Berries are especially susceptible to mold and should be kept dry and refrigerated, with any spoiled fruit removed promptly to prevent spread.
Ethylene gas can also be used beneficially to speed ripening by placing ethylene-producing fruits like apples or bananas in a paper bag with harder fruits such as avocados. Overall, organizing the fridge by grouping compatible produce and separating ethylene emitters from sensitive items can significantly reduce food waste and keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer.
