Renowned Hasidism Historian Rabbi Yitzhak Alfasi Dies at 96 in Tel Aviv

The story · English

Rabbi Dr. Yitzhak Alfasi, a distinguished historian of Hasidism and rabbi of the Goren synagogue ('Kommiyut Avraham') in Tel Aviv, passed away at the age of 96. Born in Tel Aviv on Yom Kippur in 1930 to Rabbi Israel Alfasi, a prominent Gerrer Hasid and early Tel Aviv industrialist, Rabbi Alfasi dedicated his life to documenting the history of Hasidic movements and leaders. Deeply connected to the Gerrer Rebbes, he nurtured a lifelong passion for Hasidic teachings and figures.

Over several decades, Rabbi Alfasi authored more than 90 foundational books on Hasidic history, including his monumental "Encyclopedia of Hasidism," published by Mossad Harav Kook, which has become a cornerstone in the study of Hasidic literature. His works cover a broad spectrum of Hasidic courts and generations, with notable titles such as "Hasidism from Generation to Generation," "The History of Hasidism," "The Book of Rebbes," and "Hasidism and the Land of Israel." He also produced detailed studies on specific dynasties like Gur, Chabad, and the houses of Ruzhin and Breslov.

Rabbi Alfasi wrote all his works by hand with meticulous care, preserving the memory of thousands of lesser-known righteous figures and Hasidim. His last published work was the "Encyclopedia of the House of Ruzhin - Kingdom within Kingdom," released by the Stefanesht Institute. Beyond his scholarly contributions, he served as editor of the weekly Torah newsletter "Shabbat BeShabbato" and was a beloved spiritual leader at his synagogue in Tel Aviv, inspiring many with his teachings.

In recent years, Rabbi Alfasi's health declined, but his sharp mind and Hasidic spirit remained intact until his passing. His family, admirers, and countless readers mourn the loss of a unique figure who bridged Hasidic spirituality with comprehensive historical scholarship. May his soul be bound in the bond of life.
