A devastating flood triggered by a massive landslide in the Himalayas has left approximately 1,500 people missing across Nepal and Tibet, with fears that the death toll will rise significantly. The disaster occurred on August 26 when a huge mass of mud, rocks, and ice collapsed into a river, causing deadly flash floods in a remote mountainous region used by pilgrims and tourists traveling between Lhasa in Tibet and Kathmandu, Nepal.
Nepal reports 826 missing persons, including nearly 500 foreign nationals from over 25 countries, among them 177 Indians, 63 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 Britons, and 25 Canadians. Tibet’s Girong district accounts for 558 missing people, including 260 foreigners. One Israeli citizen is also reported missing. The confirmed death toll in Nepal stands at 165, while Tibet has reported three fatalities. Authorities warn the number of casualties is expected to increase as rescue operations continue.
More than 5,000 military and police personnel are engaged in search and rescue efforts, supported by numerous helicopters delivering aid and evacuating survivors. So far, 125 people have been rescued, including 20 foreigners. Nepal’s Prime Minister, Bhattarai, has visited one of the hardest-hit areas, Bidur, to assess the situation firsthand. Many of the missing were pilgrims en route to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, sacred sites for Hindus and Buddhists.
Eyewitnesses describe entire villages swept away by mud and water, with infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings severely damaged or destroyed. Survivors recount harrowing escapes, with some losing family members buried under thick mud. Initial reports suggested an earthquake triggered the landslide, but US Geological Survey clarified that seismic activity was caused by the collapse itself, not a tectonic quake.
International aid is arriving from countries including the US, Canada, and Australia, with the UN also providing support. The scale of the disaster and the remote terrain complicate rescue efforts and information gathering. Authorities continue to warn of worsening conditions and the likelihood of discovering more victims as they reach isolated areas.
